The Australian Defence Force (ADF) says there has been a drop in the number of people leaving the armed forces for the first time in many years.
Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston has told a Parliamentary Committee an extra 450 people have joined the ADF so far this year, compared to the same time last year.
He says the ADF is on track to reach 84 per cent of its recruitment target this year, and the fact that fewer people are dropping out is encouraging.
"For the first time in many years our total separation rate for the ADF has declined below our target of 10 per cent, to 9.9 per cent, which is 1.6 per cent lower than 12 months ago," he said.
