Public servants facing the sack
Published: 14 May 2008 | Keywords: employment, budget, public servants

The national secretary of the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), Stephen Jones, says funding cuts in the Budget will result in thousands of job losses in Government departments.

The Budget included widespread cuts in spending in the public service, contributing to $33 billion in savings across four years.

The cuts include more than $7 billion in 2008-09.

Treasurer Wayne Swan will not put a figure on predicted job losses but says he is not expecting a huge number.

But Mr Jones says he expects at least 3,000 jobs will face the axe from the Government's razor gang.

"I don't call 3,300 jobs minimal," he said.

"I call that a significant cut in the front-line workers who are delivering policy and services to the Government and to the Australian public."
