Govt orders 457 visa review
Published: 14 Apr 2008 | Keywords:

The Federal Government has ordered a review of the 457 visa scheme for foreign workers.

Industrial Relations Commissioner Barbara Deegan will examine the integrity of the program, including minimum salary levels and English language requirements.

The Government has also appointed an industry panel to improve the efficiency of the skilled migration program.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans has told AM the program needs to be more transparent.

"I'm very keen to achieve that by looking at the rules and regulations to prevent exploitation, to prevent undercutting of Australian wages, but also to ensure that we can bring in the temporary skilled migrants we need to meet the economic requirements of employers," he said.

Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union national secretary John Sutton says the scheme has been exploited.

"We've seen all manner of abuses and the new Commissioner will certainly be very busy," he said.

But industry groups are warning against any further tightening of the program which might stem the flow of skilled workers.
