The New South Wales Government has been forced to concede most petrol station operators claiming to have no supplies of premium unleaded fuel have been telling the truth.
Inspectors from Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney's department launched a blitz on the state's service stations over the Easter weekend after she claimed many operators were holding the fuel back on Tuesdays, when it tended to be at its cheapest.
Ms Burney accused them of deliberately forcing people to buy the petrol on days when the price was higher.
She says 100 of the 400 service stations surveyed across the state had their premium unleaded bowsers closed but an inspection of the tanks confirmed they were empty.
The Minister says she still has doubts and the inspections will continue.
"'Im not totally convinced that every single petrol station in NSW is doing the right thing," she said.
Opposition fair trading spokeswoman Catherine Cusack says the Minister should just admit she is wrong.
"I think the Government is covered in egg from head to toe," she said.
Ms Cusack says the inspections have been a huge waste of time and money.
