National Easter road toll hits 21
Published: 25 Mar 2008 | Keywords: roads, safety, road toll

The national road toll for the Easter weekend stands at 21, after a train smashed into a car in western Victoria.

The family car was going through an unprotected level crossing when it was hit by the train yesterday.

A mother and her teenage daughter were killed in the crash, three others were flown to hospital in a serious condition.

The accident brought Victoria's weekend toll to four, but Queensland had the highest tally with seven.

Western Australia has recorded five deaths, while Tasmania has seen three.

South Australia and the Northern Territory each stand at one.

With no fatalities in ACT or New South Wales, the national toll stands at 21, five less than the same period last year.
